'6 Miles,' 'Five Feet' take top honors
NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts Kanbar Institute of Film and Television lauded six filmmakers during the closing ceremonies of its 58th annual First Run Festival, held Saturday night at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall.
Ten awards totaling $54,500 in cash were handed out. Ben Tomlin’s “6 Miles of 8 Feet” and Peter Sollett’s “Five Feet High and Rising” took home first-prize kudos in the graduate and undergraduate categories, respectively. Second prize went to Marcella Steingart (grad), “Meta,” and Dan Marks (undergrad), “Point Blank”; third prizes were bestowed upon Jodi Gibson (grad), “Friday,” and Sean Carter (undergrad), “The Surface.”
Thanks to a special millennium grant provided by the Charles and Lucille King Family Foundation, director and screenplay prizes were also awarded. Marcella Steingart and Peter Sollett won for directing; Ben Tomlin and Peter Sollett took the screenplay nods.

Saturday’s closing night ceremony ended NYU’s weeklong First Run Festival, which unspooled over 100 short films and videos. Fest also provided the opportunity for industryites to scout new talent.
“Because Good Machine has had a history of supporting first time filmmakers, e.g., Todd Solondz, we are constantly on the lookout for emerging filmmakers,” said Cielo Cerezo, story editor of Good Machine. “NYU is certainly one of those institutions that provide a pool of talent, so it’s important for us to be here,” Cerezo added.
