Fantasia Barrino, who starred as Celie in the 2007 Broadway production of “The Color Purple,” reprises her role in the new Warner Bros. adaptation, produced by Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey. The story follows Celie, a Black Southern woman in the early 20th century who is abused by her father and husband. The ensemble cast include Danielle Brooks as Sofia (a role she played in a 2015 stage revival), Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery, Colman Domingo as Mister, H.E.R. as Squeak, Halle Bailey as Young Nettie, Corey Hawkins as Harpo and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor as Mama.

Considering the high-wattage cast and stellar reviews, the film is expected to rack up a few Oscar nominations. Brooke and Henson have a chance in the supporting actress race, while the film as a whole is a likely contender for best picture. The film also has Oscars chances with its crafts, including for veteran costume designer Francine Jamison-Tanchuck and cinematographer Dan Laustsen.
